Photography Classes – Fall 2009

1.Introduction to Your DSLR - $35.00 – Saturday, January 16th, 9-4

Did you get a new DSLR for Christmas? Are you confused about all the options and settings on your camera? You'll be amazed at what you can do with some instruction. This class will give you the basic understanding you need to begin taking advantage of the power of your. You'll learn all about which shooting mode to use, how to set the proper white balance, how and when to change your ISO, what image quality to use and why. You will also learn when and how to use your built-in flash. In addition, you will learn about the relationship between shutter speed and aperture, how to control depth of field, and which lens to use for various subjects.Bring you DSLR and user's manual to this hands-on class.

Introduction to Photoshop - $45.00 – Saturday, January 23rd - 9-4

In this intensive one-day class, you will learn how to edit your digital images using Adobe Photoshop. You will learn how to: set up the Photoshop workspace for editing, use the histogram as a guide to making edits use the history panel to back out of edits you made, use levels and curves to make positive changes to your images. You will also learn how to resize your images for including in emails, uploading to the web, and printing. Bring your laptop with Photoshop installed and some of your own images to work on during class.

Photoshop Layers - $45.00 – Saturday, January 30th - 9 -4

All you ever wanted to know about Photoshop layers but were afraid to ask. In this one-day class you will learn how to improve your digital images using layers, adjustment layers, layer masks, and layer blending modes. Bring your laptop with Photoshop installed and some of your own images to work on during class. Prerequisite: Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop or previous Photoshop class.

Lighting with Off-Camera Flash – $100.00 - Saturday, February 6, 13, 20, 27, 9-12

In this class you will learn how to use speed lights to photograph a variety of subjects. You will learn: what equipment and accessories you'll need in addition to a speed light, the difference between hard and soft light and how to produce both, where to place the lights and how to get them to stay there, various ways to trigger the speed light, how to modify the light to get the effect you want, and how to balance the light with the available light. You will be able to see and try various lighting accessories to best utilize your DSLR. Bring your camera and external flash to class. Also bring your laptop to download images taken during class. Note: This class is not for point and shoot cameras. Prerequisite: Working knowledge of your digital SLR. Previous photography class. External flash.

Photographic Explorations – $125.00 - Saturday, April 10, 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15 - 9am-12pm

This class will focus on the art and technique of photography. The goal of the class is to expand the student's visual vocabulary. Saturday morning discussions and critique will be followed by a Saturday afternoon location shoot. The instructor will demonstrate how to select an appropriate subject, determine the technical aspects of the shoot, and discuss other methods that might produce the final image. On location, the participants will determine what they want to photograph as the instructor provides advice on possible technical considerations. Participants will learn to previsualize the final image and then use the appropriate technical approach to photograph the subject. Prerequisites for Photographic Explorations: Previous introductory photography class, permission of instructor, and participant must submit 6 to 8 images of their work. This class is limited to 8 participants.
